The doctors looked at the 2 newborn baby boys. They were twins and were born just minutes ago, however, their mother didn't survive the child birth. The doctors were upset about this; they could've kept her for further experiments, but they knew they had to continue with the experiment without her. They looked over at the twin boys, whose tiny hands were intertwined with each others. Both of them were sound asleep, and the doctors couldn't help but admire how they looked. With the newborn twins, they were sure to gain what no person on earth could obtain.
The first thing the doctors did were name the boys. One was named Zane. The other, Zander. Despite being almost identical in appearance, their personalities were very different. Zane enjoyed interaction with the nurses and doctors, proving that he was the smarter twin. Zander was more daring and mischievous, always causing trouble or breaking something. The doctors had a bit of trouble teaching Zander, because he was so care-free and oblivious to everything. Zane was more easy to talk to and teach. As the years went by, the twins started growing up and out-growing what they did as children. Zane still enjoyed reading, but liked reading new things and was a fast learner. Zander, on the other hand, wasn't paying attention to anything he was taught, and he was always saying or doing strange things. They ran some tests on him but found nothing wrong with him. They just thought he was simply being silly, as any normal 10 year old would. So, they left it alone for the time being.
3 years later, the doctors took Zander into one of the test rooms; a simple white room with papers, pencils and other things. They told Zander to sit in the smaller chair as they placed a few simple math problems in front of him. Other doctors watched from the other room, writing down what he did. The boy looked down at the paper, eying it carefully before picking up the pencil and attempting to work out the problems. The teacher took the paper and sighed, walking out of the room to the doctors. "He didn't even try. All he did was doodle and got all of them wrong. We need to redo the tests, just to make sure that nothing is wrong with him." The teacher said, earning some nods from the doctors, before bringing in Zane. Zander was brought back to their room, where he waited for his brother to come back.
Unlike his twin, Zane completed the test and got all the questions right, even going higher in difficulty, close to a university-level. The doctors were amazed; he was just 13 but was already doing problems most did in their last few years of university. They decided to do more tests on him, as well as figure out what was wrong with Zander. After hours of testing, Zane was brought back to his and Zander's room. But before Zander could hug his brother, he was dragged away from the room, kicking and screaming, "LET ME GO!! LET ME GOOOO!!" Zane tried to reach for his brother, but the doctors stopped him. He helplessly watched as his brother was taken somewhere.
Zander kicked and thrashed about, trying to break free. After a while, he was placed into a table, where his arms and legs were kept in place by metal braces, as well as his head and chest. "W-w-what's going on...? What about my brother...?!" Zander asked, scared as he tried to look around, failing to do so due to his head being kept in place. "Now, now, little one..." A doctor said, approaching the red-head with a large needle, filled with a strange orange liquid. He placed the tip of the needle against Zander's arm, who flinched and tried to get away. "Keep still. It's like a bug bite..." He said. "R-really...? Just like a b-bug bite...?" The doctor smirked and laughed, "No. I lied. It's gonna hurt like a motherfucker..." With that said, he jabbed the needle into Zander's arm, earning a loud, ear-piercing scream from the boy. The liquid was injected into his body, and within seconds, it began to sting.
The stinging then turned into a painful stabbing sensation that coursed through Zander's whole body, which only made him scream more, tears pouring from his eyes. The nurses and other doctors wrote down his reactions, and after a couple more multi-colored injections, Zander was close to passing out. There were numerous holes in his arms from where the needles were, and his whole body felt like it was on fire. The doctors, pleased with the results from the testing, undid the metal braces on his body. Zander was too weak to move, his vision blurry and the whole room was spinning. The nurses carefully carried him back to his and Zane's room. Upon seeing his twin barely conscious, he shouted in anger, "What did you do to him?!" The nurses didn't reply; they just placed Zander on the bed, wrapped up the wounds and gave Zander some medicine to get rid of most of the strange drugs that were injected into him. They then left the room in a hurry, leaving behind some of the medicine and medical equipment. Zane walked over to his brother, who was twitching slightly from the pain. He opened his eyes and looked at his twin, tears still falling from his bloodshot eyes. "W-wha... What did they do to you...?" Zane managed to say, kneeling down next to the bed to hold his brother's hand. Zander didn't say anything; he just stared at his twin, still twitching from pain. Zane crawled onto the bed and held his brother closely, wondering what they did to him to cause him such pain.
Months passed and Zane continued to show his incredible and intelligent mind, while Zander failed each test and puzzle he was given. "Please, Zander. It's so simple; even your brother managed to finish this in just a few seconds...!!" The doctor shouted at the boy, now 14, who just stared at him. The doctor sighed, rubbing the bridge of his nose in annoyance. He looked over at the other doctors and shook his head. They all nodded and walked into the room. A nurse walked to Zander and said, "Zander, honey... We need to take you somewhere for a little bit." He looked up at the nurse and asked, "Why?" She forced a smile and said, "The doctors said that it's time for your medicine..." As soon as those words left her mouth, Zander stood up, shouting, "No... You can't lie to me; I know what you're planning!! No more experiments, please!!" The doctors rushed in and grabbed Zander as he thrashed about, shouting, "NO!! NO MORE, PLEASE!!" They ignored him and strapped him down to the table once again. This time, however, instead of needles, the lead doctor picked up a knife. Zander's eyes went wide as soon as he saw the blade. "W-w-what are d-doing with that...?" He asked, fear in his voice. The doctor said, "We need to see if there's anything inside you that would cause you to act so... What's the word..." Another doctor interrupted them by saying, "Stupid? Clumsy? Retarded?" "NO!!" The lead doctor shouted, looking back at Zander, who was thrashing about, trying to escape. A nurse placed a mask on Zander's face, a sweet scent beginning to overwhelm his senses. Zander's world began to spin and fade, and he was starting to drift off. "That's right... Sleep. It'll be over before you wake up..." Those were the last words Zander heard before he fell unconscious.
Zane paced back and forth, wondering where his brother was or what they were doing to him. He was worried that they were dissecting him and examining his body. The red-head looked towards the door and peeked through a crack in the wood, seeing the operating room that was just down the hall. What he saw nearly made him retch in disgust:
His twin was laying on the operating table, tubes, needles and several open wounds covered his body. Zander's eyes were closed as they continued to operate on him. Zane knew that there was nothing wrong with his twin, so why were they operating on him? He didn't know; what he did know was that whatever they were doing to his brother wasn't for their 'research' on immortality. Weeks after the operation, Zander's wounds had healed up but he wasn't himself; Instead of hyper, silly and unable to pay attention, Zander was quiet, calm and as a shock to the doctors and nurses, focused during the test sessions. After the last testing sessions of the day ended, Zander was brought back to his and Zane's room. He looked at his twin, who had a distant look on his face. "Bro...? Zander, you OK?" Zane asked, waving his hand in front of his twin's face. He didn't respond; he just sat on the bed and said, "Why can't we leave...? I wanna leave this place..." The red-head sighed and sat next to his brother, holding him as he said, "We'll leave this place soon. One way or another." Zander sighed and tried to relax a bit, despite being in pain all over.
When the twins were finally 16 years old, they were separated once again, but this time, it was Zane's turn with the doctors and the experiments. They took him to a different room, one full of books and all sorts of computers and machines. From what Zane saw when Zander was being operated on, this clearly wasn't the same room. He looked at the head doctor, who just smiled and said, "We brought you here to ask a few questions, mainly about you and your brother." Zane just sat there, quietly, as they asked him some basic questions, like what they both liked and what their personalities were like. After 30 minutes of constant questions, 3 doctors came in, all wearing surgical clothes. "W-what's going on...?" Zane asked but no one responded; they just grabbed him and dragged him towards an operating room, different than the one he saw his twin in. They forced him to sit in a chair as they strapped his arms and legs down. They grabbed some cords, which had needles on the tips of them. Zane's heart began to pound in his chest as he struggled to break free. "Let me go!! Where's my brother?! What were you doing to him before!?" He shouted, but stopped when the doctors stared at him. "He knows..." One said.
"I know. We have to do it." Another replied. Zane was confused, not to mention scared, as he asked, trying not to cry, "W-what do you mean by that?! What did I do!?" A tall doctor walked up to Zane and back-handed him across the face, saying, "You saw us operating on your twin. You shouldn't have done that, brat..." He grabbed one of the cords with the needle tips on it and brought it to Zane's head. The boy tried to get away, but it was no use; he was strapped down tight and his head was secured to make him look straight ahead. "STOP!!! DON'T, PLEASE!! ZANDER!!! HELP!!!" Zane screamed but the doctor forced a gag into his mouth before jabbing the needle into Zane's head.
Meanwhile, in the twin's room, Zander was sitting on the bed, wondering where his brother was. "They don't usually take this long with testing... Something must be going on..." He said, looking at the door. He stood up, went to the door and pressed his ear against it. The red-head listened carefully and he heard muffled screams from somewhere in the building. He listened for a bit longer before he recognized the person that was screaming. "Zane?! What are they doing to him!? How could they do this to him!? They promised they wouldn't hurt him!!" Zander's body began to fill with rage; the doctors, during one of his experiment sessions, said they would never hurt Zane as long as they listened to them. The red-head kicked down the door and rushed towards the room where Zane was being kept. His screams got louder and louder, and the more Zander heard his screams, the more angry and enraged he got.
Zane was thrashing about as the needles injected their strange liquids into his brain. His vision was full of colors and blurs, and his whole body felt like it was frozen and on fire at the same time. The doctors wrote down his reactions and prepared to inject more liquids into him when Zander broke the door down, screaming bloody murder as he attacked the doctors, trying to strangle them and stab them. However, they pinned him down and tied him up with leather straps. "HOW COULD YOU LIE TO ME LIKE THAT?! YOU SAID YOU WOULDN'T HURT MY BROTHER!!" Zander screamed at the doctors. The lead doctor sighed and said, crouching down to look at him, "He found out about what we were doing with you. He can't know. It's against the rules."
"HOW CAN TORTURING ME AND MY BROTHER GIVE IMMORTAL LIFE?!" The doctors all glanced at the twins before bursting into laughter. "My child, we can't tell you that! You'll see in due time..." The lead doctor said, grabbing a medical hammer and hitting Zander on the head, knocking him out cold.
"Bring him to the other operating room. We must make sure they NEVER find out..." Was the last thing Zander heard before falling unconscious.
A few more months went by; Zander was forced to go through countless experiments and tests. Some included strange drugs that caused him to see, feel and hear things he had never seen, felt or heard before. Other methods of testing included endurance tests; forcing him to run on a treadmill for hours a day, making him eat or drink strange foods or drinks, which lead to vomiting or nausea. Some tests were more... sexual; doctors brought in girls who were drugged and they forced Zander to sleep with them among other things. Zane, however, suffered more.
He refused to do any tests, take any drugs or foods. He refused to sleep with the drugged girls, saying that it was wrong to force them while they were in this state. The doctors ended up beating Zane with whips, chains, belts and other things they could get their hands on. Zander was forced to watch, unable to protect his twin brother. He would scream and cry for them to stop, only to be slapped, shutting him up.
Years later, the twins were now 19 years old. Zander was still forced to partake in the experiments and tests, which greatly damaged him to the point of no return; he would always cry out at night, screaming bloody murder for the pain to stop. He became violent when a needle or surgical knife was brought close to him. Doctors had to restrain him in order to keep him from harming himself and the others. He also became hyper and would act strangely; saying random words, doing strange things like roll around on the floor or bite someone's head. Doctors grew worried so they did even more tests on him, which only served to make him more hostile to everyone except his brother.
Zane, however, faired slightly better. Although he was still forced to do the same tests and experiments, the doctors decided to tone down the level of the tests and such. His personality didn't change much, although he became aggressive when Zander was taken for tests, often shouting or cursing at the doctors, calling them monsters for doing this to them. Each time he shouted at them, Zane was given a painfully hard kick to the face. And Zander would be taken for testing again. Zane would curl up on his bed, crying and sobbing for this madness to stop until Zander was brought back in, covered in needle marks, bandages and tape.
One fateful day, Zander was once again brought in for the usual tests. "Now, Zander... You have to calm down...!!" The doctor shouted as the red-head thrashed about in his restraints. On this day, Zander was far more violent than usual, having bitten 3 of the assistant nurses and doctors. They tried injecting sedative's into him, but they had no effect. The red-headed boy's eyes shot wide open, tears streaming from them, as he let out a loud, inhuman screech, causing all the doctors to cover their ears. Some of them fell to the ground, blood dripping from their ears from a busted ear drum. Other fell, foaming at the mouth as the boy continued to screech. Before any of them could shut him up, Zander suddenly fell limp on the table, eyes still wide open. One of the doctors hesitantly walked over to Zander, afraid that he would attack.
However, when he got a better look at the boy, he realized that he was unconscious. The doctor let out a sigh of relief, motioning for the other doctors to take him back to his room. They dragged him back to his room and tossed him onto the bed. Zane looked at his brother, who was still unconscious. His skin was getting more and more pale; it was nearly white as snow, as was his own. Both of their usually dark red hair was now a bright red color.
All those experiments and tests, drugs, medication and surgeries didn't even make sense; What did they all have to do with immortality?
A sudden realization struck Zane. It was impossible for anyone to become immortal. Yes, you could extend your lifespan by exercising and eating healthy, resulting in your life being extended by a few years. But there was no guaranteed method of gaining eternal life. Zane got up from the bed, his body screaming in pain, telling him to stay still. But, he was fueled by anger and rage. The doctors lied to him and his twin. Their mother DIED giving birth to them. She wanted them to live a long, healthy life; find a girl, get married, have kids, grow old and die together in peace.
Instead, these doctors did nothing but experiments and tests on them. Injecting countless drugs and medications into him and Zander. God only knows what those drugs have done to him and his twin. The surgeries they did to them nearly killed them on several occasions. Zander was once a happy kid, excited to go outside and see the blue sky and feel the warmth of the sun. Now, he was depressed, constantly crying and begging to be set free from the madness of the doctors.
Seeing his brother in such a horrible state had sent Zane over the edge. He kicked the door down, rushing to the operating room where the doctors were working on another person. They looked up at him, shocked. Their looks of shock turned to looks of amusement.
"He's awake, doctor." One said, walking over to him, placing his hand on his shoulder. Zane grabbed his wrist and snapped it with little effort, throwing the doctors at the wall. He shot a death glare at the others, whispering in a soft yet venom-filled voice, "You monsters...!!" He walked towards them, still glaring at them as he continued to talk, "You lied to me and my brother...!! There's no way of gaining immortality!! All the things you've done to us all these years was for NOTHING!!"
The lead doctor laughed and laughed, "Ohhh, you stupid boy!! We did indeed lie to you and your brother. And your mother...? Nothing but a hassle. She wouldn't let us go near you while you were babies. So..." Zane's eyes went wide with horror. "You... You MURDERED HER!? Our own MOTHER!?" The doctor nodded, confirming his suspensions.
"You.... MONSTER!!!" Zane screeched as black tendrils sprouted from his back, arms and chest. His eyes became black with red irises, dripping with black blood. The tendrils grabbed the lead doctor, pulling him closer. "H-hey calm down!!" The doctor shouted, trying to break free from the tendrils on his body. "CALM DOWN?! You LIED to us for YEARS!! You traumatized my brother, MURDERED OUR MOTHER, injected hundreds of drugs and medication into our bodies, done fatal surgeries on us!! We nearly DIED because of YOU!!"
Within seconds, the tendril around the doctor's neck tightened more and more until a sickening SNAP was heard. Zane left the lifeless body fall to the ground. The other doctors and nurses were trembling in fear as Zane's head snapped around to look at them. His eyes showed no mercy at all. Only revenge.
Zander was shaking and trembling in his bed. He had just woke up, and his entire body was in pain; his vision was blurry, his arms and legs were burning in horrible pain, his head was spinning and he was scared. Where was his brother? He tried to sit up, only for his arms to give out a second later. Zander just laid there, crying from the pain in his body.
He tried again to get up, somehow managing to sit up. As he tried to stay, he fell straight to the ground, hitting his arm off of the corner of the bedside table. He screamed in pain, the drugs having amplified the pain more. The red-head slowly managed to crawl towards the door, pushed it open, and struggled to walk down the hallway. He heard screams and loud crashes coming from an operating room.
Zander pushed open the door, pausing when he saw the brutal scene in front of him:
Zane was sitting down on the operating table, blood, bones and organs scattered all over the room. Arms, legs and heads were thrown about. Tendrils were twitching and twisting all over, organs being held in each one. Zander looked at his twin, seeing that he was holding something red and bloody. "B-brother...? W-w-what are you eating...?" He hesitantly asked, seeing his twin look up at him.
"They lied to us, Zander... They killed mom... They were torturing us... There's no way that they were trying to create immortality... We suffered for YEARS because of them... I didn't want to see us in pain anymore. So..." Zane said, biting into the red object. Zander walked closer, tripping up over the bones and arms. As he got closer, he saw that his brother was eating human intestines. "W-what are you EATING?!" Zander shouted.
"I... Something came over me... I couldn't help myself..." Zane said, standing up, tossing the partially consumed intestine aside. The tendrils dropped the organs onto the floor, blood splattering around them. Zane tripped up, afraid that his brother, now looking like a monster from Hell, would kill him.
He picked up his brother, hugging him closely. The tendrils didn't do anything; they just wiggled around harmlessly. "Don't worry brother... They can't hurt us..." Zane said. Zander smiled but a voice from behind them said, "You... are NOT leaving this place ALIVE!!!" Zander stood up, seeing a surviving doctor standing with a gun in his hand. In a split second, he fired the gun straight at the boy's heart.
The bullet did hit him. However, he remained standing. He looked down at the wound, placing his hand on top of it. Zander looked up, eyes exactly like his twin, black blood dripping from them. Tendrils appeared on his back as he walked forward. "Now, that wasn't a nice thing to do, was it...?" He said, in an eeriely cheerful voice. The doctor was about to run when Zander grabbed him by the throat, lifting him up into the air. "L-Let me go!! You both are CRAZY!! Zig-zagging all over the place!!!"
Zane and Zander both looked at each other, a wide grin on both of their faces. They looked at the doctor, still smiling. Just as they both stabbed the doctor with multiple tendrils, they both said to him in an eerie voice,
"Zig... and Zag... It has a nice ring to it, doesn't it, brother...?"
